We will identify which aspects of DAIs need to be carefully considered and written about when designing and evaluating a DAI. We will identify these by reviewing existing research and finding out what DAI providers, patients and carers with experience of DAIs think is important. We will seek their opinions by inviting them to complete a three-round Delphi survey and talk to us in small groups. We will use this information to develop extensions to national gold standard guidelines for designing and reporting research (SPIRIT and CONSORT guidelines). Specifically, we will:
(1) Conduct a systematic review of existing literature to identify common problems with reporting in DAI research to develop a 'long list' of concepts to include in the SPIRIT and CONSORT extensions;
(2) Identify partner group opinions on design and reporting considerations in DAI research to finalise a long list of SPIRIT and CONSORT extension concepts;
(3) Gain stakeholder consensus, using a Delphi survey, to develop a short-list of concept/items for inclusion in the SPIRIT and CONSORT extensions;
(4) Hold a consensus meeting with partner groups to advise on the final list of items for the SPIRIT and CONSORT extensions;
(5) Develop final SPIRIT and CONSORT statements for DAI and accompanying Explanation and Elaboration (E&E) documents.
Do you have a mental health or neurodevelopmental condition or are caring for/supporting adults or children who do? Are you a DAI provider, or a human-animal interaction/animal-assisted intervention researcher? If so, and if you are interested in getting involved, please get in touch!
